Before trains and motorised transport, only
'endurance riders' travelled any distance from home!
Now, endurance riding challenges horse and
rider and tests both the fitness and stamina of the horse and the
horse management skills of the rider/groom. The sport started in
Australia and the USA - then spread to Europe, South Africa and the
Middle East.
Competitions start at around 15 miles and at
senior level may cover 100 miles or more. Rigorous veterinary
checks are in place - along the route and at completion. Pure and
part-bred Arabians are particularly suited to this demanding sport.
