Eventing - also knows as horse trials -
originated with cavalry regiments. The army requirement was for
horses who were well mannered on the parade ground, could cross any sort
of country quickly and safely, and survive to tell the tale!
Events are run either as 1, 2 or 3 day events. In a three day
event, dressage is always held on the first day, with the cross-country
and endurance phase on the second day, and a show jumping round on the
third - following a veterinary inspection. In one and two day
events, showjumping is sometimes held before the cross-country.
The sport requires fitness, skill and courage
from both horse and rider. The best horses have a high percentage
of thoroughbred blood. |
